UL-508A vs. UL-698A: Which Control Panel Standard Do You Need?

If you are specifying an industrial control panel, you have almost certainly seen the UL-508A and UL-698A markings. They sound similar, and both are issued by UL, but they cover different types of equipment. Choosing the wrong one can stall an inspection or force a costly rebuild. This guide breaks down the difference in plain language.

What UL-508A covers

UL-508A is the Standard for Industrial Control Panels. It applies to general-purpose control panels installed in ordinary (non-hazardous) locations — the enclosures that house PLCs, motor starters, variable frequency drives, circuit protection, and terminal blocks that run a machine or process.

A UL-508A listed panel has been built by a certified shop to a documented set of construction, wiring, spacing, and short-circuit-current-rating (SCCR) requirements, and it carries a serialized label an inspector can verify. For most water, wastewater, food & beverage, and manufacturing applications, UL-508A is the standard you want.

What UL-698A covers

UL-698A is the Standard for Industrial Control Panels Relating to Hazardous (Classified) Locations. It applies when the control equipment interfaces with devices located in a hazardous area — think Class I, Division 1 or 2 environments where flammable gases or vapors may be present, common in oil & gas and some chemical processes.

A UL-698A panel adds intrinsic-safety barriers, purge/pressurization provisions, or other protection methods so that the field wiring to the hazardous area cannot ignite the atmosphere. It is a more specialized listing and is only required when the application genuinely involves a classified location.

How to choose

  • Non-hazardous location, standard machine or process control → UL-508A.
  • Panel connects to instruments or devices inside a Class I/II/III classified area → UL-698A (often alongside UL-508A for the non-hazardous portion).
  • When in doubt, confirm the area classification with the facility electrical engineer before the panel is designed — retrofitting a listing after the fact is expensive.

A proper UL listing is not just a sticker. It tells the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) that the panel meets a recognized safety standard, which keeps inspections smooth and protects your facility and personnel. It also documents the panel’s SCCR, a number the NEC requires and that inspectors increasingly check.
